Quinta dos Arcos is located in Azeitão, 35 km south of Lisbon, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Arrábida Natural Park. Set in a landscape of cork oaks and olive trees, the vineyard is crossed by a river and planted mainly with French varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc, alongside Moscatel Graúdo.
No herbicides are used. The grapes, hand-harvested, come exclusively from the estate.

Born in 1948 in Vila Nogueira de Azeitão, a few kilometres from Quinta dos Arcos, António Saramago is today the dean of Portuguese oenologists. More than sixty years of passion, discovery and excellence in service of Portuguese wine.
Trained at the prestigious Faculty of Oenology of the University of Bordeaux, his masters were Émile Peynaud and Pascal Ribéreau-Gayon — the founding fathers of modern oenology. His career began at José Maria da Fonseca, neighbour of Azeitão, before leading him to sign some of the most emblematic wines of Portugal, from the Alentejo to Beira Interior, from the Ribatejo to the Setúbal Peninsula.
Recognised by Jancis Robinson and Robert Parker, recipient of the Oenologist of the Year title, he today accompanies Quinta dos Arcos in the creation of signature wines faithful to the spirit of the Setúbal Peninsula.
At Quinta dos Arcos, the same gaze cultivates the vines, restores the buildings, and paints the labels. A journey that brings together, in a single gesture, the work of the land, architecture, and painting.
Everything begins in the vineyard. Hand harvesting, no herbicides, attention to the rhythm of the seasons. The grapes, sourced exclusively from Quinta dos Arcos, express a terroir between the Atlantic Ocean and the Serra da Arrábida — limestone soils, sea breezes, long hours of sun.
Technical guidance is provided by Engº António Saramago, dean of Portuguese oenologists. Each wine carries an intention; each harvest tells a story.
The century-old buildings of the estate have been restored with respect for the memory of the place. Traditional façades have been preserved, interiors have gained a contemporary language, and sustainable solutions — such as rainwater recovery on the cellar roof — are discreetly integrated into the heritage.
The Adega das Ânforas is the architectural heart of the project: a space designed to host both traditional barrel ageing and ancestral fermentation in clay amphorae.
A pictorial practice that has been in dialogue with the work of the land for more than a decade. Each wine carries an original work — painted by hand, in the contemporary expressionist tradition: sunflowers, portraits, winemaking scenes, self-portraits. The labels are not decoration: they are a sensitive extension of the territory.
The painted portrait of Engº António Saramago, displayed in the section devoted to oenology, is one of the works in this series. Painting the man who signs the wines is, for the author, a form of gratitude.
35 km south of Lisbon, off the main roads, in the countryside between the Atlantic Ocean and the Serra da Arrábida.
